KPK invites PPATK to trace sources of Gayus’ money

Justify Full

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) says it has started to trace sources of money in the account of tax corruption defendant Gayus Tambunan, by requesting help from the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Center (PPATK).

KPK spokesman Johan Budi SP said the sources of the Rp 28 billion in Gayus' bank accounts was among evidence implicating the former tax officer that hadn't been pursued by police investigators so far.

“We are studying allegations that have not been followed up by police investigators [with the help of the PPATK],” Johan said.

The move to trace the sources of the money, Johan said, was in response to calls from anticorruption activists including the Coalition for Civil Society, which had urged the KPK to take over the investigation amid the apparent incompetence of the police institution and judiciary.

Previous reports revealed that Gayus had bribed prison guards and had been able to slip out of his cell to go on vacation, including to overseas destinations, while he was supposed to have been detained at Kelapa Dua Police Detention Center in Depok, West Java.

Gayus shares birthday with Indonesia: Fake passport

“This is a photo of Gayus with a wig [as seen] on the “Sony Laksono” passport. The same pseudonym Gayus [used] when he watched tennis in Bali,” Denny wrote below the snapshot.

The passport boasts a photo of Gayus sporting a mop-top style wig and black-rimmed spectacles resembling those he wore when he attended the Commonwealth tennis tournament in Bali.

A Gayus look-alike was photographed watching the tournament last November. Gayus later admitted it was indeed him, adding that he had bribed a prison warden to secure the excursion.

Gayus' date of birth on the fake passport is written as “Aug 17, 1975,” making him around four years older and making his birthday fall on Indonesia's anniversary of independence.

A passenger of an AirAsia flight wrote to Kompas daily she had seen a man resembling Gayus sharing her flight to Singapore in September.

Nearing midday on Wednesday, the Twitter-based snapshot of the fake passport had been viewed 18,122 times.

ESPN soccernet has selected Indonesian winger Oktovianus Maniani as an Asian soccer player that could play in Europe thanks to his entertaining dribbling ability, which looks similar to Manchester United star Ryan Giggs.

Okto burst onto the regional scene at the recent AFF Suzuki Cup, in which Indonesia made the final before being defeated by Malaysia, ESPN columnist John Duerden said Sunday.

"Oktavianus is certainly fun to watch as he hares down the left flank, and, at the tender age of 20, is only going to improve. If the “Indonesian Ryan Giggs” is to match up to the original, he needs to follow in his footsteps and find a consistent end product. Still very raw, but that just makes him all the more exciting," Duerden wrote on the ESPN website.

Other Asian talents on Duerden’s list include Deng Zhuoxiang of China and Koo Ja Cheol of South Korea.
